In 2008 we were asked to create a hologram of the famous marine timekeeper, the H4, made by John Harrison, who succeeded in winning the Longitude prize. The prize was created to come up with an accurate method of measuring Longitude at sea, so important to help sailors and navigators plot their positions in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Harrison timekeepers are stored and maintained by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and it was an honour to be able to produce a holographic record of such an important artifact. Two holograms were produced, one of the watch face and the other of the rear, where the intricate workings of the timepiece can be seen, together with a finely engraved design that includes the inventor's signature.
